Cam Skattebo injury update: How long is Giants RB out?

The New York Giants suffered a couple of key losses in Week 8. One was their game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The other was star rookie Cam Skattebo.

Skattebo needs surgery to fix the ankle dislocation he suffered, and that will throw his long-term status for the Giants into doubt.

How long will Skattebo be out? Here’s what to know about the powerful runner’s timeline to return from the brutal injury.

How long is Cam Skattebo out?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Skattebo is expected to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from surgery to repair his dislocated ankle.

Skattebo’s surgery was of the emergency variety, as he suffered an open dislocation with his injury, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, That means there was an open wound or tear over the joint in association with the dislocation.

The silver lining? Despite the serious nature of the injury, Skattebo should have a chance to be back on the field for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, per Rapoport.

‘If all is good and clean and the surgery went as well as everyone believes, he should be back with no issues for next year,’ Rapoport said on NFL Network the morning of Oct. 27. ‘It’s a gruesome injury but the recovery is actually not as bad. We’ve seen several others with similar injuries come back and play the next year. Dak Prescott comes to mind. So, 2026 for Cam Skattebo.’

The Giants have not yet provided a timeline for Skattebo’s return. The team simply announced Skattebo suffered an ankle dislocation and was set to undergo surgery to repair the injury at a Philadelphia-area hospital.

Giants coach Brian Daboll did not have much information about Skattebo’s injury when asked about it after the game.

‘I feel absolutely terrible for the young man,’ Daboll told reporters.

Cam Skattebo injury update

Skattebo’s injury occurred during the second quarter of the Giants’ 38-20 loss to the Eagles in Week 8.

Skattebo was twisted awkwardly to the ground by Philadelphia linebacker Zack Baun while trying to catch a middle-of-the-field pass from Jaxson Dart. The rookie running back’s right leg was caught under him while he went to the ground, and when Skattebo rolled onto his backside, his right ankle was facing the wrong direction.

Skattebo was tended to by Giants medical staff on the field after his injury. He was then carted into the locker room with his right leg in an air cast.

The Giants later ruled Skattebo out for the game before announcing he had been taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Who is Cam Skattebo’s backup?

Tracy has totaled 159 yards on 45 carries during the 2025 NFL season to date. The 26-year-old, who played wide receiver during the first four years of his college career at Iowa before transition to running back at Purdue, also has caught 10 passes for 68 yards.

Giants RB depth chart

The Giants now have three healthy running backs remaining in their organization with Skattebo sidelined. Below is the pecking order within the group.

  1. Tyrone Tracy Jr.
  2. Devin Singletary
  3. Dante Miller (practice squad)

As mentioned, Tracy figures to be the backfield leader with Skattebo out of action. Tracy averaged 16.5 touches per game across the final 13 games (12 starts) of his rookie season in 2024 and racked up 1,123 yards for the season.

Singeltary will provide veteran experience behind Tracy. The 28-year-old generated 1,000 scrimmage yards in three consecutive seasons from 2021-23 but has taken on more of a complementary role during his two seasons with the Giants. He has just 84 yards on 26 carries this season but has caught three passes for 28 yards.

Miller remains on the Giants’ practice squad but could be called up as a third-string option to add depth behind Tracy and Singletary. The 2023 undrafted free agent has played just eight total snaps during his NFL career and has never logged a touch on offense.
